For some reason, I feel the need to make a list (you can read about my obsession with lists here.) This one is about people and/or things I either like or don't, for reasons I can't really explain. I got to thinking about this because of Tom and Katie's wedding being all over the news.
I don't like Tom Cruise. The mere mention of his name makes my nose crinkle up in disgust. When said crinkle happened this weekend because of wedding news, I wondered why I had that reaction. Thus, the reason behind the following post...
Like: Bill O'Reilly. Whether you agree with the man's conservative nature or not, the guy's got moxie. He calls it like he sees it and knows how to put idiots in their place. (Have you seen the interview Hannity and Colmes did with Fred Phelp's wife? Awesome. Fox News. I kinda love it.) I find it intriguing, whether I agree with what any of them say or not. And I what I like is that is makes me think.
Dislike: While on the subject, I dislike Fred Phelps. The man's a jack***. Enough said. No wondering why here.
Like: The Amazing Race (TAR). I adore this show. I haven't watched it since 2004, because I refuse to watch CBS after they cancelled the best show on television. Sounds frivolous, but I feel better knowing they don't have my Neilson percentage to count. Giving up the show was hard because I love the idea of crazy Americans going all over the world to experience other cultures. I loved watching them gain a new appreciation for another culture. Americans don't always take time to do that, but TAR gives the racers tasks that are specific to the culture they are in. I love that. I miss watching it.
Dislike: Survivor. I just don't understand this show. I can't wrap my brain around a TV crew living comfortably just yards away from people who are eating rats. Makes no sense to me and I don't care to watch it.
Like: Denzel Washington. I like him because he's classy and the picture of professionalism. Doesn't hurt he’s a great actor. (If you haven’t seen the little-known movie Fallen with him and John Goodman, it’s worth renting.)
Dislike: Tom Cruise. I really dislike what he said about Brook Shields and postpartum depression. After all, he should know what it feels like you give birth to a baby, being a man and all (and I use the term “man” quite loosely). It is rumored he apologized and she graciously forgave, however. I also cannot stand the aura of arrogance that surrounds him whenever I watch him in an interview. He just puts me off. I can't explain it exactly, it's just there.
Like: David Letterman. There is no explanation for this. He's a geek - but he's a funny geek. I just like the guy's show.
Dislike: Oprah. Yeah, I feel like I should catch some slack for this. She's a good person, she strikes me as humble most of the time. What I struggle with perhaps is not her, but the millions of people who take her word as gospel. She has so much power, and it's so subtle. That's what scares me about her.
Like: Snopes.com. A great website for fishing out real and fake urban legends.
Dislike: People who email forwards that contain crappy misinformation and fake urban legends without checking it first. It really bugs me when people forward junk like "Sign this petition so the FCC doesn't ban spiritual programming" (which isn't true) or "Target doesn't support veterans" (also untrue). Actually, snopes.com probably only exists because of those people who forward those stupid emails without checking to see if they are true.
Let me have it if you wish. I've got tons more like this.
